Adjustable Backstay Project

Writer: mtjones08mtjones08

I installed an adjustable backstay on Sail La Vie to make raising the mast easier. Using the block and tackle on the adjustable backstay I loosen the tension on the backstay before raising the mast allowing me to raise the mast past the final resting position. This then allows me to attach the roller furler with ease. Once the mast is in position I can tighten the adjustable backstay and the rigging is ready to go.

The second reason for installing the adjustable backstay was to be able to introduce a slight reverse bend in the mast in heavier wind conditions allowing for less heal and better up wind performance.
